The story of a couple from Hanzhong City, Shaanxi province who abandoned their 33-day-old baby in the cold because of his illnesses has gained attention from shocked netizens across the country.
According to reports, the baby was found the morning of December 25, wrapped in a blanket in a bamboo grove with very weak breath and white foam coming from his mouth near Han River. The baby was sent to a hospital immediately, but despite medical staff’s full efforts to revive him, he died.
Police received information from the hospital that the boy looked similar to one who had previously been in the hospital and was diagnosed as having a cerebral hemorrhage. That night, police were able to track down the child’s parents and grandmother.
Police then learned that the father had barely finished Junior school and the mother and grandmother had never finished primary school. The family had another 7-year-old boy.
They parents and grandmother said that they had decided to abandon the baby on their way home, after learning about his illness.
Police told journalists that during the interrogation, the family had admitted to their crime without hesitation. The grandmother even said, “If the baby is sick, then he deserves to be abandoned in the wild and fed to the dogs.”
The case has been transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department of Hanzhong City.
