China’s icebreaker Xuelong has found itself stuck in ice after rescuing passengers from a stranded Russian Vessel Akademic Shokalskiy in Antarctica on Friday.
The helicopter Xueying aboard the icebreaker managed to rescue all 52 passengers who had been trapped for over a week and deliver them safely to the Australian icebreaker Aurora Australis, but it appears that the Xuelong has now been blocked by a one-km-long iceberg that’s been drifting northwest, according to Xinhua.
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said that the Xuelong is not in distress and did not call for any assistance as of this morning.
The AMSA also stated that masters aboard Akademik Shokalskiy and Xuelong agreed that no further assistance was needed from Aurora Australis and that they could ‘provide mutual support to each other’.
The Aurora Australis and all rescued passengers are safe and heading towards Australia.
Strangely, one of our commenters had predicted that this would happen.
