Wenzhou’s special force police on January 8 found the body of a tiger in the trunk of a white Toyota SUV in Zhejiang province. The police team was on its way to Jiangbin East Road for training when officers saw the white Toyota on the side of the road and discovered what experts later identified to be a rare Siberian tiger wrapped in blankets inside the trunk.
According to the official Wenzhou police website, the officers passed by as two men were carrying a suspiciously large bag to their car. Upon questioning, officers opened the bag to see the dead tiger’s body inside. One of the men carrying the bag immediately took off and the other has been arrested.
Under China’s criminal law, people who illegally traffic endangered wild animals on the state’s key protection list can face a maximum penalty of 10 years in jail plus fines.
The country has been handling the illegal trade very seriously as of lately. Last week, the government carried out its first-ever massive public destruction of illegal ivory.
