Doctors had the pleasure of extracting a half-kilo, 30-centimeter long hairball from the stomach of a 12-year-old girl in Henan province who—shocker—had the habit of chewing on her own hair.
The elegantly gut-shaped hairy blockage was taking up some 70% of the girl’s stomach, and would quickly break anyone’s Grossness Meter (except, apparently, for the doctor in the above photo who seems thrilled to be holding the thing on a silver platter). The Global Times loves this kind of shit, and reports:
“The mass of hair was shaped like her stomach and is solid,” said Chen Ye, deputy director of gastrointestinal tumor surgery department at the hospital.
Doctors said Qian Qian suffers from pica, a pathological disorder where sufferers develop an appetite for clay, dirt, chalk or other similar substances that are considered socially unusual to eat.
“I’ve seen her put hair in her mouth, but I thought she was just playing and didn’t think much about it,” said Qian Qian’s mother who sought treatment when she discovered a lump in her daughter’s stomach two weeks ago.
The girl’s parents have been reminded to pay more attention to her actions, and doctors recommended, well, stopping the girl from eating insane amounts of her own hair. A good starting point, for sure.
