An American man named Steve proposed to a dying Sichuan woman named Wu Meng in her office building after the two met nearly a year ago.
Steve, 39, and Wu met last year and formed a relationship. Both of them had been in previous marriages with children. Steve’s wife passed away by a car accident and left a five-year-old Ava, Wu Meng got divorced from an unhappy marriage, and was living with a 7-year-old son.
Steve said he fell in love with Wu the first time he met her and has been asking to be her boyfriend ever since but Wu politely rejected him.
“I saw him as a friend, besides I had just gotten out of a marriage, I didn’t want to get into another relationship that soon.” Wu said.
Late last year, Wu was diagnosed as having PAH (pulmonary artery hypertension). ”Doctor said the condition is pretty severe and I might have less than one year to live.”
When Wu told Steve about her condition, he gave her his full support and began paying visits to her in the hospital whenever he was free.
Wu accepted his love eventually, and last Christmas, Steve made his first attempt to propose to her, but she rejected.
“I can’t believe a man would want to marry a dying woman, I don’t want to be a burden to anyone.” Wu said. Steve had reportedly tried to propose to her two more times, but the result was the same.
“In order to scare him away, I said I wouldn’t marry him unless he proposed to me in Chinese, in public.”
Wu thought this would make him stop, but Steve proposed to her again, in her office building, telling her in Mandarin “I love you, I want to marry you”. Wu was so deeply touched by Steve’s effort that she finally said yes.
“No matter how difficult it might be in the future, I want to spend my life with this woman.” Steve said. He also said he planned on bringing Wu back to America for better treatment when her condition became stable.
