In case you missed it in October, here’s the hilarious parody of Vanilla Ice’s “Ice Ice Baby” by comic Scott Huntsman in Beijing (Vanilla Rice?). It pokes fun at the way expats view Chinese food, capturing our eagerness to try new things abroad mixed with our paranoia brought on by rampant food safety scares. Word to your 妈妈.
That nauseatingly catchy 90s beat kicks in, the eyes bug out, and then it’s onto a scintillating ode to gutter oil, character-only menus, and diarrhea that flows more than the narrator himself.
A puzzling sequence that juxtaposes several laowai sporting prominent food babies with a ripped Chinese guy using his six-pack as a washboard. Perhaps it’s supposed to symbolize that laowai blame Chinese food for their health problems while it’s really just their poor eating habits, and Chinese guys can handle the food? Or maybe we’re reading too into it.
The obligatory nod to expat-waiter translation issues.
