The bromance lives on. President Xi Jinping will be in attendance for the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, China’s Foreign Ministry announced in a brief statement on Monday, good news for Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose invitation was snubbed by US President Barack Obama, French President Francois Hollande and German President Joachim Gauck when they announced that they would not be traveling to Russia for the Games.
China Daily reports:
To ease fears over possible breaches of security, Putin has ordered safety measures beefed up nationwide after 34 people were killed last month in bombings in Volgograd, another city in southern Russia.
About 37,000 Russian personnel are providing security in the Sochi area.
The two leaders have long enjoyed chum status. In September, China stood by Russia’s side in pushing for a political solution to the Syrian civil war and in October, the two celebrated Putin’s 61st birthday together drinking vodka and eating sandwiches. Xi even uncomfortably joined in clapping along to the”Happy Birthday” song for Putin.
