A girl named Zhang Xi has attracted the attention of Chinese internet users after some realized that she had been posting daily messages to her boyfriend for the last four years, despite the man’s death in 2009.
Zhang’s boyfriend died in December 2009 in Vancouver, and she quickly started leaving messages on her boyfriend’s Renren (see: knock-off Facebook) as a means of mourning. What started as an expression of grief has now become part of Zhang’s daily life.
Saying that she felt woeful about her boyfriend’s death, Zhang promised to give the man company “until their countless anniversary”, Zhang pledged her word and she kept it. Some messages recall the past, some share her contemporary happiness, some are complaints, and most act as though her boyfriend had never left.
Many internet users were touched after reviewing Zhang Xi‘s messages, but she said she isn’t very used to becoming the center of the attention and hopes that this will soon come to pass. If the past is any indication, she shouldn’t worry too much about the lasting attention span of internet users.
