Actor, martial artist, smog-lover, and CCP-apologist-fo’-life Jackie Chan was in Korea on January 17th for a red carpet event for his upcoming ‘Police Story 2013.’ Chan lovingly chatted with fans, proudly displayed his new movie, and confusingly shouted, “I’m half Korean!”
Jackie was, apparently, speaking metaphorically. He has now elaborated, saying that when he experienced difficulty in his life, he received a lot of help from “the South Korean people” and therefore he’s “half Korean” at heart. He went on to say that he has a ‘blazing love’ for South Korea, he even attended some of the country’s most famous national TV shows like Running man and The Knee-Drop Guru show(Korean:무릎팍 도사, Chinese:膝盖道士)
His speech got a hugely positive response in Korea, but not so much back home. Some Chinese internet users, who are apparently a bit pessimistic about China and S.Korea’s relationship have jumped at the opportunity to make Jackie look like an ass (not that he hasn’t been trying his damndest to do that on his own).
A typical response has been in the vein of, “He’s such an opportunist,” with one saying that “He could really say ANYTHING in order to please the local fans!”
Other Weibo users have been more forgiving, saying that Jackie “always had a deep relationship with Korea, so he’s obviously just expressing his love for the country”, and asking, “Why are people over-exaggerating over something he said for the moment?”
In response to that latter question: Welcome to the internet.
