A 23-year-old man named Zhou Wei who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy as an infant has been dubbed by media as the “Chinese Rain Man“.
Zhou gained nationwide attention for his mathematical performance on the Chinese TV show “The Brain”, where he correctly calculated the 14th root of a 16-digit number within one minute.
Recently, China’s famous pseudo-science debunker Fang Zhouzi challenged the TV performance, taking to his Weibo account to call it a fraud.
Zhou’s mother, however, fervently defends her son’s incredible mathematic talent, although she says she can’t explain it.
“Some people doubted my son,” she said “I don’t care, the facts will tell the truth. My son is not cheating, he’s a real somebody.”
Zhou, who was turned away from schools, mostly works on accounting equations from his home in rural Wutai County, Shanxi province.
His mother said that entering him on the “The Brain” was a last resort effort to draw attention from specialists who could help give a proper diagnosis of his illness, which would hopefully lead to better treatment.
So far, though, she says nobody has stepped forward.
