Lovers of infographics: Baidu created this awesome heat map showing the trips Chinese travelers have made so far for the New Year holiday and which destinations have been the most popular.
According to TechinAsia, the heat map was created with data gathered from smartphones using Baidu Maps, currently boasting over 200 million registered users, and other apps.
The heat map updates every four to eight hours, showing the most popular destinations, points of origin, and travel routes. It includes a search function so you can see stats from specific cities and time frames. Here’s a few stats as of press time:
•The most popular destination is Beijing, followed by Chongqing. The hub cities in Hunan and
•Guangxi provinces tie for third.
•Beijing is also the most popular city to leave, followed by Shanghai and Guangzhou.
•The trip both to and from Chengdu and Beijing take up the top two most popular routes.
As we’ve reported before, over 3.62 billion trips are expected to be made during Chunyun, the 40-day travel period surrounding the Chinese New Year holiday. This year’s Chunyun runs from January 16 to Febuary 24, and in the first 10 days alone the country saw 867 million road passengers, up 4.7 percent from the same span of time last year.
