A court in Henan has ordered three years of prison for Guo Zengxi, the police officer who caused a national uproar last summer when he reportedly grabbed an infant and threw her to the ground, causing severe injuries to the child’s head.
Last year on July 18, the off-duty policeman, who had been drinking with his friends, saw a couple with a baby. He walked over to them, grabbed the infant from the father’s arms and threw her to the ground. He had apparently placed a bet with his friends that the child was only a doll.
The infant was immediately rushed to hospital where she was treated for a fracture in her skull and other injuries. Guo paid compensation for medical costs, but initially only received 15 days in confinement as punishment from Linzhou Publish Security Bureau.
A court in Henan province has now adjudged its verdict on Guo’s case. He was convicted for deliberately harming the child and was sentenced to three years in prison. The defendant did not lodge an appeal.
