Two more Journey to the West characters have appeared among the crowds, this time at a barbecue stall on a street in Yan’an, Shaanxi province where these vendors served up food dressed as the Monkey King and Pigsy, both popular characters from the classic Chinese novel.
A sign hanging from the bottom of the stall reads: “The most popular street food: Tang Monk’s meat”. The vendors even printed out a poster from the 1986 Journey to the West TV series, you know, for authenticity.
While the spectacle certainly grabbed the attention of onlookers, not all were amused by the masquerade.
One heartbroken five-year-old boy in particular was seen crying near the stall. “My son loves watching Journey to the West, and he worships the Monkey King. This stall’s setup has apparently been a huge shock to him,” his mother said.
This isn’t the first we’ve seen the Monkey King out and about on the town. In fact, earlier this week he was spotted buying a train ticket home for the Spring Festival. We don’t think this is the last time we’ll be seeing him around (at least until the release of his new movie later this year).
