A retired teacher living in Chongqing spent 11 years knitting a sweater and hat made of her own hair as a way to preserve her long locks and retain memories of her youth, according to local media reports.
The 60-year-old woman surnamed Xiang collected over 110,000 hairs as they began falling out of her head at the age of 34 to create this sheer sweater, weighing around 382 grams, and a matching cap embroidered with flowers. The cap was made for her husband and weighs 119 grams.
Xiang said in reports that she saved all of the hairs she found in her comb on a daily basis and began using them to knit in 2003. Each hair she wove into the sweater is around 70 to 80 centimeters long, and around 15 hairs were used to make a strand of yarn.
“This method is not difficult,” she said. “The key is to have patience and perseverance.”
Xiang also said that she wants to participate in “China’s Got Talent” to show off her final product.
