Chinese filmmaker Feng Xiaogang (who’s had a pretty action-packed year, by the way) served as the opening director of the Spring Festival Gala for the first time ever on Thursday to mixed reviews.
One of the most well-received parts of the gala was the opening segment called “What is the Spring Festival Gala?”, showing people from all backgrounds and their views on the holiday. Netizens said the clip was very characteristic of Feng’s work.
Despite his achievements in directing films, his handling of the Spring Gala was considered “rookie” work by many. Netizens complained that it was too much of dance and music show and not enough of a talk show.
Here’s a quick overview:
To celebrate the 50 year anniversary marking the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and France, French singer Sophie Marceau joined Liu Huan on stage to sing La Vie en Rose, much to the delight of netizens.
Lee Min-ho and Yu Chengqing sang a song called Compulsion, and while many thought the performance itself was okay, people were puzzled to see the two men sing lyrics like “I’m worried that I might fall in love with you” to one another.
Jackie Chan accidentally mispronounced “The best night” as “The last night” while he was guest-hosting and netizens wondered if it was some sort of hidden doomsday message.
This performance “China Symbol” by the Attraction Dance Troupe from Hungary has been one of the most-watched clips.
Oh and this happened.
Feng probably won’t be directing the Spring Festival Gala again any time soon, but some online users have already began suggesting directors for next year’s event, including Zhang Yimou who directed the Beijing Olympic Games opening.
