Photos of mice clambering on bags of rice at an RT Mart in Shanghai’s Fengxian District caused quite a stir on the internet, and among food safety authorities, who demanded an explanation.
According to reports, the mart needed to procure large quantities of rice in advance to meet demand during the Chinese New Year holiday, so they rented a temporary warehouse that was infested with mice.
This apparently didn’t faze the the staff, who unpacked the infested bags, and poured them into a rice bucket to sell at their mart. From the looks of it, the mice were actually nesting in the bags.
Authorities have closed down the warehouse, and promise to mete out severe punishment to all those involved (we hope).
