Chinese fashion models including Zhang Lina, You Tianyi, Liu Xu and Ju Xiaowen (from left to right) walked down the runway at the New York Fashion Week presenting designs for Fall/Winter 2014 on February 6.
Chinese models have become increasingly prevalent in the international circuit since Du Juan from Shanghai picked up international recognition when she was chosen to grace the cover of Vogue China’s first issue.
Liu Wen, hailing from Hunan province, is currently the fifth highest paid model in the world, earning around 26 million yuan per year, and was dubbed by the New York Times as “China’s first bona fide supermodel”.
“In the last couple of seasons you have seen a sudden increase [in Asian models]” Angelica Cheung, editor of Vogue China, said to The Guardian. “Even in the last two or three years it was pretty much about Du Juan: she was the only one going big. Now they have all appeared.”
As its luxury market continues to increase, Shanghai was just named the top fashion capital in Asia, followed by Tokyo, Singapore and Hong Kong.
