Two firefighters were killed when a warehouse in Shanghai’s Baoshan district collapsed over the Spring Festival holiday, the local fire department announced.
Lu Chen, 23, and Sun Luoluo, 19, were battling a fire from within the warehouse at the Shanghai Huazhen Packaging Material Factory when it suddenly collapsed, trapping them inside along with two other firefighters from the squad. Sun was found dead on arrival and Lu died in the hospital not long after, according to a post on the Boashan district fire department’s microblog.
Eleven teams and 30 fire engines were sent out to the scene after the fire broke out around 10:50 a.m. on Tuesday. They were able to control the blaze around 1:10 p.m.
Four firefighters, Lu and Chen among them, had entered the warehouse for a second round to put out any remaining flames. That’s when the building unexpectedly collapsed. The other two firefighters in the warehouse were injured.
A funeral was held for the two firefighters at the city’s Longhua Funeral Parlor this morning, Shanghai Daily reports. The Ministry of Public Security conferred the posthumous title of revolutionary martyr on one of the firefighters.
