Clouds of fog resting over the city of Xiamen on Thursday afternoon resulted in dozens of photos depicting the dream-like quality of the seascape going viral on social media.
Tourists posted images of a ghostly mountain enveloped in mist above the Gulangyu Island as fog floated along coastal parts of the city. Residents called the natural wonder a blessing for the new year.
Meteorologists attributed the effect to advection fog, which occurs when most air passes over a cool surface by wind, creating clouds that hang suspended over the city, according to What’s On Xiamen. The scene has been compared to “the Abode of Immortals on the sea described in Chinese legends”.
