A group of brilliant, bitter single netizens have strategically ruined date night for couples in Shanghai trying to catch a romantic movie on Valentine’s Day by buying out all the odd-numbered seats.
The Shanghai Morning Post reported today that several internet users united through a crowd-funding website to carry out the trolling task, reserving every other seat on the Valentine’s night showing of Beijing Love Story at a theater in a Xintiandi shopping mall as to thwart couples from canoodling.
“Want to see a movie on Valentine’s Day?” an online netizen under the username “UP” posted. “Sorry, you’ll have to sit separately. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Give us singles a chance.”
“UP”, the organizer of the scheme, described himself to reporters as a “computer nerd” who broke up with his girlfriend last year.
Netizens, probably all single, got a kick out of the stunt. “What a great way to disrupt the plan of the enemy,” one microblogger joked.
Valentine’s Day is is pretty much a giant joke to China’s netizens (as it should be).
