A US artist has been charged with criminal mischief over $1,000 USD after he smashed a $1 million vase created by Ai Weiwei at an art museum in Miami as a “spontaneous protest” against its favoritism towards international artists. Watch the offense go down as little fucks are given.
The video shows the man, 51-year-old Maximo Camerino, picking up one of Ai Weiwei’s colored vases at the Pérez Art Museum Miami and dropping it to the ground, despite being told by security to put it down.
He told officers that he broke the vase to protest the lack of local artist displays in the museum.
Adding insult to injury, Camerino told reporters that he wasn’t aware of the vase’s worth, and likened it to a pot one might find at at Home Depot. “I thought it was a common clay pot like you would find at Home Depot, frankly,” he told the Miami New Times. “I didn’t know it was that amount. I feel so sorry about it, for sure.”
“All of us here the museum are horrified by this criminal act. This is vandalism. We’re very upset,” said the museum spokeswoman, Leann Standish, said in a Telegraph report.
She added, however, that the museum welcomed the “interesting dialogue” that has opened up in the wake of the incident.
Ai Weiwei, on the other hand, is not so amused.
