Zhang Yidong, a charity worker from Anhui province, is planning to undergo plastic surgery to look like Lei Feng, a former PLA soldier and Chinese icon who represents earnestness and service. On February 20, he received micro-needle injection at a hospital in Hefei to begin his physical transformation in commemoration of Lei.
Lei served as a soldier in the People’s Liberation Army of China, and after passing away in 1962, he became a symbolic character revered for his selfless personality and devotion to the Communist Party.
Recently however, Lei’s spirit of service has been lost on China’s younger generation. Last year, screenings of the film Young Lei Feng were cancelled in cities across China after not one person bought a ticket on the holiday commemorating him.
While Zhang has been praised for his…commitment to Lei, most agree that his endeavor a tad extreme.
