Netizens have been moved by the dedication of 40-year-old Yu Xukang, a single father from rural Sichuan who spends nearly six hours every day running back and forth to get his disabled son to school.
Every morning, Yu wakes up at 6:00 a.m. and takes off from the house around 7:00, carrying his son on his back. He spends more than two hours walking his son to school, and in the afternoon around 4:00, he takes him back home again in the same amount of time.
In total, Yu spends around six hours per day traveling back and forth because of the rural area’s lack of transportation.
Yu’s son, surnamed Qiang, 12, has only just started first grade due to his disability. His hand and foot are bent and his spine is severely curved.
“From the township health center to the hospital in the city, we have been everywhere, but the doctors don’t know what the illness is and can’t give a diagnosis.” Yu said.
Qiang’s mother ran away when he was 3, and since then, Yu has taken responsibility of raising the child on his own.
He walks 28 kilometers on foot every day, around 2,500 kilometers in total since this past school semester started. Because he travels down the rugged mountain road, Yu has already worn through three pairs of rubber shoes in half a year.
“We are never late,” he said proudly.
