Out of the 32 departments of the Imperial Palace, 20 of them apparently have stray cats lazing about. The stray-cat-ification of the Palace has gotten out of control over the past five years, and the facility’s management has already spent 18,410 yuan on sterilization campaigns.
Currently,181 stray cats have been sterilized; some are strays from the city, some are the offspring of previous Palace cats, and some are throught to be left behind by visitors.
“The palace treats stray cats very well and a lot of people know that,” a staff member said, which may explain why some random city dwellers would bring their cat to be dropped-off.
Staff have said that, although there may be a few too many cats around, the Palace’s mouse and rat problems have essentially ceased to exist.
