A man from Shanghai gave up smoking, drinking and lost 22 kilograms of weight in order to successfully donate his bone marrow to a stranger after receiving a call from the Red Cross.
Pan Weizhong, a petrochemical worker, is a volunteer hematopoietic stem cell donar. Last year in October, he received a call from the Red Cross telling him that his blood type matched that of a sick patient, 28-year-old Han Guilin from Henan. “I’m willing to donate,” he told the organization.
Pan realized that he had a fatty liver and thought that it might affect the procedure. In order to give a successful donation, he knew it’d be necessary to lose weight. He began eating healthy, rejecting meals and taking up exercise. He also gave up smoking and drinking to ensure that he would be in good health. By December, Pan had lost 22kg.
Recently, 300ml of hematopoietic stem cells were successfully injected into Han’s body.
“I may have had to leave this world without peoples’ care,” Han said, “My biggest wish is to be able to visit the man who helped me in Shanghai, to express my gratitude.“
