The Shanghai Changzheng Hospital denies that it requires doctors to carry around riot shields to defend themselves from aggressive patients and relatives of patients, according to official statements.
The rumor began to circulate after a Weibo user under the username @詹涓june posted a photo of a doctor writing prescriptions in front of his patient with a riot shield propped against him. The user said that the doctor was from a Shanghai hospital and many netizens commented with shock that the picture illustrated increasingly tense doctor-patient relationships.
The hospital confirmed to reporters that the photo was taken in the hospital and that the doctor works in the hospital, but the picture was misunderstood by the netizens. According to the hospital, the photo was taken for fun by another doctor before the shield was transferred to another room.
“It was only a joke, we’ve never thought it’d go viral so fast,” he said.
