Domestic violence in Haizhu, a Guangzhou district, has increasingly been identified as a source of divorces throughout Guangzhou overall, according to the Yangcheng Evening News.
In 2013, in Haizhu, 94 divorce cases were completed in the Haizhu People’s Court. The foremost cited reasons for divorce were domestic violence and adultery. Despite more women naming domestic violence as a reason for divorce, only three of the 94 divorce cases were granted because of domestic violence. Furthermore, Haizhu court statistics show that approximately 85 percent of female domestic violence victims are middle-aged, in their 40s and 50s.
Unfortunately, the rise of either reported domestic violence or domestic violence in general, is in line with 2011 All China Women’s Federation report that about one in four Chinese women will experience domestic violence at some point in her life, and not everyone has the comparably happy ending of Li Yang’s ex wife, Kim Lee.
