When thinking of delicious sweets, vegetables almost never come to mind. This doesn’t always have to be the case however. Miss Ma, located in Pudong’s SWFC building proves this by serving pastries made entirely of veggies.
The decor is very sweet and princess-y. Sparkling crystal chandeliers and poofy chairs are accented by light green walls and large glass jars of candies and macaroons. Maybe too cutesy for some but since they are specializing in macarons and the like, it fits together appropriately.
They rely on the vibrant colors of certain fruits and vegetables to create beautifully crafted treats like macarons and cakes. There are several normal varieties of macaron to choose from like Chocolate-Caramel, Coffee, and Vanilla, which are all flavorful and intense; perfect for a two to three bite delight. Quirkier options include Carrot White Bean, Beetroot Sea salt and nuts, Purple Cabbage and Dark Chocolate, as well as Spinach and Wheatgrass.
One piece runs you 12RMB but you can only buy six at a time so it will be 72RMB in total – they throw in a miniature lunchbox too. I also liked the idea of sampling all of their flavors and sharing them with others, so the 72RMB didn’t seem too pricey. While the idea of beetroot and cabbage can be off-putting for some, the flavors are more of what’s in the filling. Those extracts bring a wonderful color to the overall taste and appearance. My favorite was the Carrot and White Bean which was sweet and the bean reminded me of mung bean. The Red Pepper and Lemon was nice but a bit overpowered by the chili. Overall they are all worth a try. They offer drinks as well, most of them reasonably-priced coffees and teas.
If you are in the Lujiazui area or feel like making the trek out there, Miss Ma is a good find. It takes a bit of searching as it’s located on the third floor of the mall inside the bottle-opener-like Shanghai Financial Center. It is a sight to see and a fun twist on the ever-popular macaron. You can find other versions for a lesser price elsewhere but only here will you find this brand of unique eat.
