75-year-old Yang Zhiqiao spends her days strapped inside a massive Mickey Mouse costume near a park in Luoyang, Henan, charging tourists for photos in a desperate attempt to get a wife for her unmarried 40-year-old son. Yang says that, “I have to make more money to find my son a wife,” but the biggest problem with a man who relies on his elderly mom to dress up every day in a weird ploy to support him may not be a financial one.
Yang’s son apparently bought the costume himself, and planned to use it to earn some money, but “never did because he had ‘other business.’” Instead, poor old ma’ has to suit-up, as South China Morning Post reports:
Yang said she wore the costume from early morning to sunset, but had to take a break every ten minutes.
“The costume is too heavy, there is little air inside,” she was quoted as saying. “If I wear it for a long time I cannot breathe.”
Local children have dubbed Yang the “Mickey Mouse Grandma,” and gladly cough up her 10 yuan fee for a photo. Nevertheless, marrying Yang’s son may be something of a civil service at this point, just to let the poor old woman relax.
