US first lady Michelle Obama kicked off her week-long stay in China with a visit to a Beijing middle school this morning, accompanied by China’s first lady and fashion rival Peng Liyuan.
The two women arrived at the Beijing Normal School in the Xicheng district around 9:30 a.m. today before taking a tour of the classrooms, according to South China Morning Post. It so happens that the No. 2 High School attached to the Beijing Normal University is “sister schools” with the Sidwell Friends School in Washington DC, where both the youngest Obamas, Sasha and Malia, attend.
Obama arrived in Beijing with her two daughters and mother on Thursday on the invitation of Peng, and will accompany China’s first lady to the Forbidden City and to an honorary dinner this evening.
Obama and her family will also be traveling to Xi’an and Chengdu for sightseeing and speeches, during which time the US first lady plans to focus on education and cultural exchange rather than politics.
Obama and her family were welcomed by Assistant Foreign Minister Zhang Kunsheng and US ambassador Max Baucus when they exited the plane yesterday, and upon seeing pictures, Chinese netizens pointed out that FLOTUS’s dress was created by Derek Lam, an American designer with Chinese lineage.
Your move, Peng.
