Enight C. Bar’s somewhat cryptic title actually stands for “Enjoy Night, Cocktail Bar.” It’s situated on the edge of Xintiandi where buildings from the previous generation are being torn down to make way for the glittering plate-glass and brick of the new. Fittingly, Enight C. Bar straddles the line between giving into the glitz and keeping some of that old grime on the place.
The venue looks small from the street but opens up once inside. There is the tiny bar upfront with four bar stools but walk back and down to a multitude of armchairs and tables or walk upstairs to tables and booths. It’s dark and simple, no need for chandeliers or framed mirrors. The owners are very nice, and they double as bartenders and hosts since only one of them speaks fluent English. They have specials like two for one happy hour every day and a ladies night every Wednesday. You can also ask up front for cups and dice and really feel like you’re in China.
The drinks are decent. They have bottled beer – I didn’t see room for a tap – as well as house wines. Lined up along the bar were about fifty bottles of Bacardi Breezers which were apparently left over from a big event they had the week before. There is a full bar so you can order anything you like or choose from the cocktail menu they have. It includes classic cocktails like Gin & Tonic, Cosmopolitan, Long Island Iced Tea (58RMB) and Old Shanghai cocktails, possibly an homage to the swinging Shanghai of the 1920s. These are all 68RMB per drink and have titles like Naught: Gin, Grenadine, and Milk (ick), Crazy: Scotch, Cassis, Raspberry, Strawberry, and Mint, and The Old Horst Koehler: Whiskey, Grand Marnier, Martini Rosso, and Lime something like a cross between a Manhattan and an Old Fashioned.
Nothing here is overly exciting or nostalgic but they get the job done. I would stop in for happy hour since the cocktails are strong and the two-for-one deal is good. Otherwise this place might get overlooked as another joint trying to make it in an already over-saturated area. Make the call for yourself.
