Three seamen are now missing after their ship collided with another vessel yesterday morning and sank near the Waigaoqiao Port in Pudong.
Shanghai Daily reports that the ships, Xinwang 88 and Wuxiang 66, crashed into one another in dense fog at 2:58 a.m., causing the former to sink. Seven men were on the ship but rescue vessels were only able to rescue four of the men.
The incident delayed several vessels in the channel, including the Royal Caribbean International cruise liner, which was forced to drop anchor outside the port. Ferries to Chongming Island, passenger liners at Wusong Port and cruises around the Yangshan Deep-Water Port were also affected by the morning fog, though operations had returned to normal by noon.
A blanket of fog shrouded the whole city early yesterday, reducing visibility to less than 500 meters in some areas, the local weather bureau said.
The fog likewise led to several delayed flights into Pudong International Airport before the alert was lifted today.
