Beijing-based artist Gao Rong Guo created a powerful series of portraits of identical twins facing towards each other. All the twin couples are over fifty years old, as it is the author’s belief that “the fifties are often called the years to know one’s fate.” Rong Guo adds that “He/she used to have the same face, living in the same family, but their lives changed due to various reasons while growing up.”
Gao Rong Guo travelled around his hometown province of Shandong in the search for the identical twin pairs and so far has published a total of 12 portraits. The project observes poignant differences in the once-identical brothers’ / sisters’ appearances such as height, and facial expressions. The extremely touching series ends with one image that shows only one of the twins, the opposite frame being left empty, showcasing a hill and letting the viewers know that one of them is gone.
