A Chinese man testified in a Canadian court for the first time after witnessing via webcam his former girlfriend being attacked, raped and murdered in her Toronto apartment nearly three years ago.
Toronto’s Sun News reports that 27-year-old Xia Chao Meng of Beijing took to the stand and described what happened as he helplessly watched the murder of Qian Liu, 23, during a Skype session in the early hours of the morning on April 15, 2011.
“She asked me whether I had time to keep her company (while she did her homework),” Meng said through a Mandarin interpreter. He told the court that sometime around 1:00 a.m. as the two were talking, Liu got up to answer her door and was met by a man who asked if he could use her cellphone.
According to Meng, the man pressed some buttons on the phone and Liu continued to talk with him as she tried to close the door.
“All of a sudden, something happened. A man tried to force in and (Liu) was trying hard not to let him in,” Meng testified.
“When the man entered, he just closed the door and he wanted to embrace Liu, and Liu was pushing him (back) at his chest … but that person didn’t listen … Liu was pushed down.”
Meng said he heard Liu scream “no” both in Mandarin and English, then she was silent. Shortly after, Meng said he saw the man as he locked the apartment door, turned off the lights and shut down the computer screen while half-naked.
“I was stunned. You can’t imagine a person who is so hopeless,” Meng said.
The jury trial for 32-year-old Brian Dickson, who is charged with first-degree murder, will continue on Monday.
