In his latest visit to Europe, Xi Jinping has made a public speech about the incompatibility of a multi-party democratic system to the Chinese situation. The Chinese president claimed that China had experimented with such systems previously but all had failed, and if they should be implemented in present China, there would be devastating impacts.
“Constitutional monarchy, imperial restoration, parliamentarism, a multi-party system and a presidential system, we considered them, tried them, but none worked,” Xi said in a speech at the College of Europe in the Belgian city of Bruges, the official Xinhua news agency reported late on Tuesday.Xi Jinping’s reassertion the Chinese government’s commitment to their political system comes as he embarks on his own Eurotrip in what has been seen as part of the new President’s zesty attitude towards foreign relations.
Because of its unique historical and social conditions, China could not copy a political system or development model from other countries “because it would not fit us and it might even lead to catastrophic consequences”, Xi added.
“The fruit may look the same, but the taste is quite different,” he said.
The news comes as a shock to some, considering the CCP’s history of tolerance towards democratic activism and, and genuine promises of democracy. Guess they had us fooled.
