A police officer from Chongqing who headed the economic investigation bureau was found dead in a hotel room in Yuzhou, Henan province last Friday night. Yuzhou police announced via its Weibo account that the case has been ruled a suicide.
According to investigations, the officer, Zhou Yu, has been suffering from diabetes for years. The long-term administration of insulin has led to heart disease and other complications. Recently, he has also been diagnosed with severe cirrhosis which led to feelings of depression and anxiety, and talked to his colleagues about his pessimistic outlook on life.
According to another Chongqing Morning Post report, Zhou had been awarded a labour recognition award alongside 20 other officers in May 2010. He also received an ‘Outstanding Young Guard’ title along with 60 other officers.
