A man in Shanghai who turned himself in a day after he sold his baby girl out of fear that he couldn’t afford her was charged with child trafficking at a court in Minhang district yesterday.
Wang, a 28-year-old migrant worker originally from Guizhou province, sold his daughter in January for 28,600 yuan when she was three months old. He had three other children and she was the youngest. Wang and his wife didn’t think they could afford to keep her, so they resorted to selling her to a family they’d met from Jiangsu province who agreed to buy the child.
A day after giving her up, the couple felt so remorseful that they went to the police to confess what had happened. Wang said that they had tried for the fourth child because in their hometown, it’s seen as good luck to have two sons and two daughters. They had a son and two daughters already.
Last month, police smashed four child-trafficking rings and arrested over one thousand people connected to a website that was used to trade babies.
