Japanese students studying at Peking University gave out “free hugs” to pedestrians roaming Beijing’s Yuyuantan Park in hopes of promoting improved relations between China and Japan.
According to Jiji Press, the group of students from the university’s School of International Studies was also out last week in Beijing’s Wangfujing shopping district carrying placards and calling for friendship between the two nations currently fuming over a certain set of islands, among other issues.
Over a 30-minute period, some 30 passers-by responded to the call to be hugged.
While asserting China’s ownership of the Japanese-administered Senkaku islands in the East China Sea, one 58-year-old from Jilin Province in northern China accepted the offer of a hug with delight.
We hope it goes over better than this Diaoyu/Senkaku friendship cake.
