Visitors to the Daheishi Coast in Dalian, Liaoning province got to witness this magical little spectacle of nature over the weekend as a the water along the seashore began glowing and glittering blue-green. Fantasia-esque.
Photos were first posted by the Weibo user HERO越大林 and garnered over 1,000 reposts on the social media platform before being picked up by local media.
Wang Bing, a professor at the School of Marine Technology and Environment at Dalian Ocean University, told newspapers that the phenomenon was the result of an aggregation of shiny microorganisms such as flagellate.
Bioluminiscent Bay in Puerto Rico is famous for this phenomenon. The flagellates in the Bay are dinoflagallates, a specific type of organism able to make its food through photosynthesis, which causes the water to glow.
