Six boys drowned in a lake in Yunnan province on Thursday, local authorities confirmed today, as they were playing in the water after school.
Police received reports that seven children, all in the 6th grade at Dashu Primary School in Tonghai county, had fallen into Qilu Lake around 6:40 p.m. on Thursday. One was rescued while the other six drowned.
Around two hours prior, some of the boys had gotten on a deserted boat while others were standing nearby on a foam plank in the water. The boat turned on its side and the students onboard fell in, as well as those on the plank. One managed to climb on the foam plank to safety.
In a similar instance last May, five students around the same age drowned while playing in a river in Guangzhou and in another tragic case from last October, an 18-year old student in Henan drowned after rescuing three children who fell in a lake.
