China’s former president Jiang Zemin, who’s tried his damndest to stay clear of the spotlight in recent years (although his appearance in this strange Gangnam Style mashup was unavoidable), was caught by camera-phone-wielding photographers making two public appearances in the past week, including one in Shanghai.
The elusive Jiang, 87, was first photographed at Slender West Lake in Yangzhou on a boat with his wife Wang Yeping, SCMP reports. Pictures of the outing were taken by local residents who soon posted them online. The couple are both Yangzhou natives.
In a video clip that was posted on Wednesday, Jiang was seen leaving a residential building in Shanghai while surrounded by bodyguards. The footage was apparently taken on Monday as he was visiting his cousin for around 20 minutes inside the building, according to witnesses who leered out their windows for a look.
After walking out of the building, Jiang was met by bodyguards who escorted him back to a black mercedes. He was accompanied by General You Xigui, his personal security chief and deputy director of the Communist Party’s General Offfice. Jiang was seen smiling and waving at residents who gathered around, according to witnesses.
