A woman in Wuhan, Hubei province on Wednesday was seen on the streets attempting to sell her grandson as a way to save the young boy’s leukemia-stricken father, according to Xinhua.
The woman was spotted kneeling near a food market in the Xinzhou district on Wednesday morning with another little girl who looked around three years old, according to accounts from a man named Tong.
In front of the woman was a poster explaining that her 30-year-old son was diagnosed with acute leukemia earlier this year and the family needed 300,000 yuan for a bone-marrow transplant.
“I’d like to trade my 8-year-old grandson, who’s in primary school, for 300,000 yuan to save my son,” the woman said.
Police soon intervened and stopped the woman upon receiving reports. They spoke with the woman’s son and his wife, who claimed that they didn’t know the woman was putting their child up for sale.
The woman’s husband told reporters that they didn’t want to sell their grandson “but we have no other means. We just hope some kind-hearted people will help save our son.”
