Studies show that Chinese men outdrink women even more than we thought with 10% of Chinese males bingeing at least once a week compared to women’s 0.3%. It’s even more surprising considering that in neighboring Vietnam, the women not only outdrink the men, but drink Russian men under the table as well.
WHO attributes the discrepancy between Chinese men and women’s drinking habits to the fact that women are traditionally discouraged from consuming alcohol (although the alcohol gender gap is purportedly shrinking in the face of rising income), while males are encouraged and even ordered to binge drink at business banquets. And in many instances, the possibility of being promoted depends on it. Sometimes quite blatantly, like in the case of a douchebag Zhejiang boss who held a drink-off, where the heaviest drinker would win the highest year-end bonus.
Because who cares if you have a Harvard degree or on-the-job skills when you can bong a 12-pack of Tsing Tao in a second flat, right?
