A man in Beijing is now seeking to divorce his wife after she took their son to another province to avoid the city’s toxic smog, a move that he claims ruined their marriage.
Reuters relays the news a from Beijing Times report that the man, surnamed Wang, married his wife in 2008 and the couple had a son two years later. The boy developed seriously health problems as a result of living in China’s notoriously polluted capital, so the wife decided to take him to the southern resort island of Hainan to live.
The woman was unhappy living away from her husband, and the two constantly fought when they met, leading Wang to file for divorce. Now Wang blames the smog for his broken marriage, the court case for which is still pending.
“Smog ‘buried’ my son’s health, and it has ‘buried’ my marriage,” he was quoted as saying.
Frankly, we’d probably be more shocked had one Mr. Li from Hebei not already tried to sue the government over the issue.
