Maggie Cheung, revered as one of the greatest actresses to come out of Hong Kong, has decided to dabble in another spectrum of entertainment. She probably shouldn’t have.
The 50-year-old screen icon unveiled her new rock band at Shanghai’s Strawberry Music Festival on Thursday, where she covered Taiwanese singer Teresa Tseng’s “Tian Mi Mi”, Rihanna’s “Stay” and her own song “Visionary Heart”.
According to one Weibo user who was present during the 45-minute set, “As soon as Maggie Cheung opened her mouth, everyone went silent. One friend said, ‘There you have it, tomorrow’s headlines. Another said, ‘Finally someone who can outdo Cecilia Cheung.’ And a third declared, ‘This is a God-forsaken voice.'”
Cheung, who was named Best Actress at Cannes Film Festival for her role in the film Clean (wherein she did a song performance), semi-retired from acting after 25 years to perform as a film composer.
Cheung is recognized in movies for her low-pitch voice, but god help her, it just couldn’t make the transition. Apparently many people walked off in the middle of her set.
