Supermodel Miranda Kerr and Michael Kors himself attended the opening party for his Shanghai flagship store last night, the biggest store the brand has in China. Other celebrities appearances at the opening included Carina Lai, Gao Yuanyuan, Lin Chiling, Karmen Pedaru, Ming Xi, Isabeli Fontana and Leigh Lezark.
The store opened in January at the Jing’an Kerry Center, where Burberry and Abercombie & Fitch also inaugurated their Shanghai flagship stores last month.
Victoria’s Secret supermodel Miranda Kerr apparently had a great time at the event, as seen from her Instagram photos, shared to an audience of almost 4 million followers.
According to WWD, Michael Kors is in town to host another major event, “Jet Set”, at Hongqiao International Airport this evening. Set in a private 30,000-square feet jet hangar, the event will feature a runway show of one-off pieces as well a large-scale video projection show. The latter, developed by 3-Legged Dog Art & Technology Center and Bureau Betak, will employ a combination of high-definition video, holographics, and special effects to “transport” the audience to three different locales: a city, a beach and a mountain resort. New York-based DJ collective The Misshapes will provide music for the evening.
The designer has also taken in a few of the city’s key sights and gauged his celebrity status in the country. WWD quotes him as saying: “There was definitely some excitement about my late night walk on the Bund”. “It’s a nice kind of ‘recognized.’ I don’t have to deal with, you know, paparazzi on scooters and all that jazz. People ask for a selfie, people ask for a picture, and they leave it at that.”
Michael Kors probably opened the flagship with hopes that the party hasn’t ended yet for luxury brands in China, despite the Chinese government’s ongoing anti-extravagance campaign, as part of Xi Jinping’s war against corruption in the country. Unfortunately, things didn’t play out as planned for luxury brand Hermès.
