Shanghai’s own Boxing Cat Brewery, along with Hong Kong’s the Roundhouse and Beijing’s Great Leap Brewing, was recently named one of Asia’s 10 best beer bars by CNN! Congrats, BCB brew crew!
It’s been quite a journey for American brewmaster Michael Jordan, who’s “hopped” around the globe, working for breweries in Denmark and the US before coming to Shanghai. Jordan opened Boxing Cat in 2008, and since then BCB beers have won six medals between the annual Asia Beer Cup and Australian International Beer Awards.
BCB primarily specializes in North American-style brewing beers like “Sucker Punch Pale Ale” and “TKO IPA,” which is easily one of the best IPAs we’ve had either here or stateside for that matter. However, as Jordan points out, they source ingredients from around the globe, and many of their collaborative brews feature local ingredients. Last year, BCB launched a “Bruce Chilee IPA” with Chinese green chilies, rye malt, and US Simcoe hops, and they recently rolled out a White Shanko Goji Ale, which featured goji berries.
Boxing Cat has two locations, currently offering 6 beers on tap, and a third one is currently under development.
