As if China hasn’t been hypocritically hard enough on New Zealand’s dairy industry, they recently tightened restrictions on NZ baby formula imports, dealing a huge blow to producers.
In fact, between that and banning British cheese after inspecting a dairy that doesn’t even supply China, the Middle Kingdom’s supposed increase of food standards has been perceived by some as a protectionist attempt to help local producers by handicapping the foreign competition – especially seeing how this food safety crackdown only appears to occur on the other side of the wall.
And considering the piss-poor food safety practices of many local companies, it’s like taking a sledgehammer to the legs of top Kenyan distance runners so the fat guy in the wheelchair can win the race.
