The women, reportedly afraid to be recognized in the mainland, choose Taiwan for more low-profile mingling in the sex tourism scene.
A convenience store assistant told one reporter that she saw mainland women escorted by young “tour guides” coming to buy wine and beer at least twice a month.
Some people in the know said the so-called “tours” are arranged by some mainland travel agencies that book air tickets and hotels for women and provide “custom services”, such as male escorts.
Chen Qiongha, a head of Taiwan tourism, expressed surprise when questioned by reporters, but said the tourism bureau may be comprised of suspicious tourists including self-guided tourists. A lawyer surnamed Liaofang was cited in the report as saying that sex tourism customers could receive punishment, and any crimes related to sex trafficking could be sentenced to up to seven years imprisonment.
