Swanky Tunes is Russia’s number one EDM act supported by heavyweights from across the globe including Tiesto and David Guetta. From ULTRA Music Festival to SENSATION, these boys only play at the biggest events, and now they are coming to Shanghai for Electric Circus music festival happening on May 24 at the Pudong Exhibition Center.
We caught up with Swanky Tunes ahead of their show at Electric Circus on Saturday and talked about their background, music production and future releases or musical collaborations.
Tell us about your background: how did you grow up, and what were your dreams before you started doing music?
We grew up in a small city next to Moscow called Smolensk since kindergarten, and have lived there throughout school and university. Let’s just say we lived an ordinary life. The only thing we felt was cool growing up was electronic music. Techno, house, ambient, minimal, electro, etc. This was our passion and it gave us a lot of motivation. We felt it was something interesting, fresh and incredible. That’s why we decided to learn more about production. Fifteen years ago we just had one dream: to make our music famous and well known. There’s no doubt we’re on the right track now.
Is it easy to cope with the creativity of three producers while making music?
In the beginning it was difficult to connect everyone’s ideas into one track. Step by step we found different points we could work on. Of course, it doesn’t mean we don’t disagree with one another once in a while. No, we do and we argue a lot, but we’ve came a long way and it’s different now.
When you create new tracks, where do you mainly look for inspiration?
We listen to a lot of different music styles, which inspire us a lot. From rock, grunge, hip-hop, trap, funk, or punk. It really doesn’t matter though music is our passion.
Who is your dream artist to collaborate with? It could be from any genre of music.
When people ask us this question, it’s hard to give a straight answer. Do you remember that episode from “Coffee and Cigarettes” where Tow Waits meets Iggy Pop? No? So just imagine you really like someone’s music, then you meet that person one day and you don’t connect. How can you collaborate in that case? It’s not really possible. So we try not to dream, but simply find others with similar interests. We’ve already done collaborations with Tiesto, Kaskade, Hard Rock Sofa, Matisse & Sadko, DVBBS. Who’s next? Time will tell.
What do you know about the music scene in our neighboring country China?
Honestly, we don’t have enough information to make a conclusion. It’s our first gig in continental China and we’re expecting it to be a lot of fun. It looks like the Chinese EDM scene has a great potential and will be one of the biggest one soon.
What is in store for you in the future? Could we be expecting an album from your label Showland?
We’ve just finished a lot of tracks and are planning a release schedule with our management team now. Mostly it’s vocal tracks and you will hear them very soon. Of course we think about an album and probably at the end of this year we’ll lock ourselves into the studio to start working on it. What label will release it? We don’t know yet, but our imprint Showland could be a good place for it.
